Innovative Tech Trends in Home Renovations

In a world where technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, it’s no surprise that our homes are becoming smarter and more efficient than ever before. The realm of home renovations is not exempt from this technological revolution. From energy-saving solutions to automated systems, innovative tech trends are reshaping the way we approach renovating our living spaces.

Let’s delve into some of the most exciting and game-changing tech trends that are transforming the landscape of home renovations.

Smart Home Integration

The concept of a smart home is no longer confined to sci-fi movies. Today, homeowners can seamlessly integrate smart devices into their renovation plans, controlling everything from lighting and thermostats to security cameras and entertainment systems with the touch of a button or even voice commands. Smart home technology not only enhances convenience but also improves energy efficiency and home security.

Energy-Efficient Solutions

With a growing emphasis on sustainability, energy-efficient technologies are gaining popularity in home renovations. From solar panels and smart thermostats to energy-efficient appliances, homeowners are investing in solutions that reduce their carbon footprint and lower utility bills in the long run. These innovations not only benefit the environment but also add value to the home.

Virtual Reality (VR) Design

Visualizing your renovation project has never been easier thanks to advancements in virtual reality technology. With VR design tools, homeowners can take virtual tours of their renovated spaces before any construction begins, allowing them to make informed decisions about layout, materials, and design elements. This immersive experience streamlines the design process and minimizes costly errors.

Augmented Reality (AR) Applications

Augmented reality apps are revolutionizing the way homeowners envision their renovation projects. By superimposing digital images onto real-world environments, AR applications allow users to see how different paint colors, furniture pieces, or decor items would look in their space without making any physical changes. This technology empowers homeowners to experiment with design ideas and make confident choices.

Smart Appliances and Fixtures

From refrigerators that can create grocery lists to faucets that dispense precise amounts of water, smart appliances and fixtures are redefining convenience in the kitchen and bathroom. These connected devices not only streamline everyday tasks but also offer insights into usage patterns, helping homeowners optimize their resource consumption and save money in the process.

Robotics and Automation

Robotics and automation technologies are making waves in the realm of home renovations, particularly in construction and maintenance tasks. From robotic bricklayers and 3D-printed homes to automated lawn mowers and cleaning robots, these innovations are revolutionizing the way we build, maintain, and upgrade our living spaces. Robotics not only increase efficiency but also improve safety on construction sites.

Internet of Things (IoT) Integration

The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming homes into interconnected ecosystems where devices communicate with each other to optimize performance and enhance user experience. By connecting various smart devices and sensors through a centralized hub, homeowners can create personalized automation routines that cater to their unique preferences and lifestyle.

Green Building Materials

As environmental consciousness continues to grow, there’s a rising demand for sustainable building materials in home renovations. From recycled wood and bamboo flooring to low-VOC paints and eco-friendly insulation, green building materials offer a healthier and more environmentally responsible alternative to traditional options. Incorporating these materials into renovation projects not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes indoor air quality and occupant well-being.

In conclusion, the future of home renovations is undeniably intertwined with technology. From smart home integration and energy-efficient solutions to virtual reality design and robotics, innovative technologies are reshaping the way we design, build, and inhabit our living spaces. One thing technology cannot do, is replace the immense value a design & build company brings to the table. Any renovation will be in the best of hands with a skilled, bondable, trustworthy contractor or design and build company. By embracing both a skilled renovation company and some of these tech trends, homeowners can create homes that are not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but also sustainable and future-proof. So, whether you’re planning a minor makeover or a major renovation, consider incorporating these innovative tech trends to transform your home into a modern marvel.

Define Your Vision

Begin by envisioning your ideal kitchen. Consider your lifestyle preferences and the functionality you desire. Are you a gourmet chef in the making or someone who enjoys a cozy space for family gatherings? Define your vision and let it guide the entire design process.

Before diving into the renovation process, take some time to evaluate your current kitchen and identify what aspects need improvement. Consider factors such as layout, storage space, appliances, lighting, and overall aesthetics. Think about how you use your kitchen on a daily basis and what features would make your life easier.  Set clear goals for your remodel. Are you aiming for a modern look with sleek appliances and minimalist design, or do you prefer a cozy, rustic vibe with warm wood tones and vintage accents?

Once you have a clear understanding of your needs and preferences, it’s time to create a design plan for your new kitchen. Consider hiring a reputable Design/Build company to bring your vision to fruition. Working with a Design/Build company, start sketching out different layouts and configurations to optimize the use of space. Consider factors such as workflow, ergonomics, and the placement of key elements like the sink, stove, and refrigerator.

Choose a cohesive design scheme that reflects your personal style and complements the rest of your home. Whether you prefer a classic, timeless look or a bold, contemporary aesthetic, select materials, colors, and finishes that tie everything together seamlessly.

Select Quality Materials and Appliances

The choice of materials can significantly impact the aesthetics and functionality of your kitchen. In 2024, sustainable and durable materials are at the forefront. Consider eco-friendly options for flooring, countertops and cabinets while ensuring they meet your design expectations.

Invest in high-quality materials and appliances that will stand the test of time. When it comes to cabinetry, opt for durable hardwoods like maple, cherry, or oak, and consider features such as soft-close hinges and full-extension drawers for added convenience. For countertops, granite, quartz, and marble are popular choices known for their beauty and durability.

When selecting appliances, prioritize energy efficiency, functionality, and aesthetics. Stainless steel appliances lend a modern, professional look to the kitchen, while integrated models can help maintain a seamless appearance. Don’t forget about ventilation, lighting, and plumbing fixtures, which play crucial roles in both functionality and style.

Embrace Smart Technology

In today’s fast-paced world, where time is of the essence, incorporating smart technology into your kitchen remodel can significantly enhance both efficiency and convenience. Gone are the days of traditional kitchen setups; now, homeowners are opting for innovative solutions that streamline everyday tasks and elevate their culinary experience.

Upgrade your kitchen with appliances that can communicate with each other and with you. Imagine a refrigerator that notifies you when you’re running low on groceries, or a smart oven that can be preheated remotely using your smartphone. Connected appliances not only simplify meal preparation but also help you stay organized and minimize food waste.

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating the right ambiance in your kitchen. With smart lighting solutions, you can adjust the brightness and color temperature to suit different activities, such as cooking, dining, or entertaining. Additionally, motion-sensing lights can illuminate your workspace automatically, saving energy and enhancing safety.

Say goodbye to messy hands and cross-contamination with touchless faucets. These innovative fixtures use motion sensors to activate the water flow, making kitchen cleanup effortless and hygienic. Not only do they reduce water wastage, but they also add a modern touch to your space.

Maximize your kitchen’s storage capacity and organization with intelligent solutions like motorized cabinets, pull-out shelves, and drawer organizers. Smart storage systems utilize technology such as sensors and RFID tags to optimize space usage and keep your kitchen clutter-free.

Prioritize Functionality

Efficient kitchen design is key. Considered the kitchen work triangle — the relationship between stove sink and refrigerator — to optimize workflow. Take into account the significance of optimizing the flow of traffic through the kitchen as well as the work zones in order to enhance functionality.

Address the need for ample storage in the kitchen. Consider various storage options such as cabinets, drawers, pantry organization systems, and built-in shelving. Consider the importance of maximizing vertical space and utilizing corner cabinets effectively.

It is vital to have sufficient countertop space for meal preparation, cooking, and other kitchen tasks. Consider the durability of different materials for countertops as well as their maintenance requirements, and suitability for various kitchen activities.

Select energy-efficient appliances that meet the needs of the household.

Value the importance of proper lighting in the kitchen. Consider the different types of lighting (e.g., task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting) and how they contribute to functionality and aesthetics. Recognize the need for adequate lighting in work areas, such as over the countertops and stove.

Select durable and easy to clean flooring materials suitable for a kitchen environment. Take into account factors including comfort, slip resistance, and maintenance requirements when choosing the flooring.

It is important to have proper ventilation to remove cooking odors, excess moisture, and airborne grease. There are many options including range hoods and ventilation systems. Maintaining a healthy indoor environment should be a priority.

Once the remodel is complete, take the time to celebrate the transformation of your kitchen. Host a dinner party or intimate gathering to showcase your newly renovated space to friends and family.

Eco-Friendly Home Renovations: Sustainable Choices for a Greener Home

In an age where environmental consciousness is becoming increasingly important, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and make sustainable choices. One significant avenue for doing so is through eco-friendly home renovations. Whether you’re considering a major overhaul or just a few updates, there are numerous ways to make your home more environmentally friendly while also saving money in the long run.

Eco-Friendly Home

Sustainable Materials

Choosing sustainable materials is a fundamental aspect of eco-friendly home renovations. Opting for materials that are recycled, reclaimed, or sustainably sourced can significantly reduce the environmental impact of your project. For example, bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood are excellent choices for flooring, as they are renewable resources that require minimal processing. Similarly, recycled glass countertops and tiles offer durability and style without depleting natural resources.

Sustainable Materials

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Replacing old, energy-guzzling appliances with energy-efficient models is another effective way to make your home more eco-friendly. Look for appliances with the ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Upgrading to energy-efficient refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and HVAC systems can significantly reduce your home’s energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills and less environmental impact.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Solar Panels

Harnessing the power of the sun through solar panels is an increasingly popular option for eco-conscious homeowners. Solar panels generate clean, renewable energy that can help offset your home’s electricity usage and reduce your dependence on fossil fuels. While the upfront cost of installing solar panels can be substantial, many homeowners recoup their investment through lower energy bills and tax incentives over time. Additionally, some local governments offer rebates or other financial incentives to encourage the adoption of solar energy.

Solar Panels

Water-Efficient Fixtures

Conserving water is another essential aspect of eco-friendly home renovations. By installing water-efficient fixtures such as low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads, you can significantly reduce your household’s water consumption. These fixtures are designed to use less water without sacrificing performance, helping you save money on your water bill while also conserving this precious resource.

Water-Efficient Fixtures

Improved Insulation

Proper insulation is key to reducing energy waste and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment year-round. By upgrading your home’s insulation, you can minimize heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems to work overtime. This not only lowers your energy bills but also decreases your home’s carbon footprint by reducing the amount of energy required for heating and cooling.

Improved Insulation

Native Landscaping

Don’t forget about the outdoor spaces when planning your eco-friendly home renovations. Native landscaping involves using plants that are indigenous to your region, which are better adapted to the local climate and require less water and maintenance than exotic species. By incorporating native plants into your landscaping, you can create a beautiful and sustainable outdoor space that supports local biodiversity and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Native Landscaping

Conclusion

Eco-friendly home renovations offer a win-win solution for homeowners looking to reduce their environmental impact while improving the comfort, efficiency, and value of their homes. By making sustainable choices in materials, appliances, energy sources, water fixtures, insulation, and landscaping, you can create a greener home that benefits both the planet and your wallet. Whether you’re embarking on a major renovation or just making a few updates, every eco-friendly choice you make brings us one step closer to a more sustainable future.

Custom Cabinets

Tailored to Your Space

Custom cabinets are built to fit your kitchen’s exact dimensions, making them ideal for irregularly shaped spaces or unique layouts. This means that you are not restricted to a set size, shape or material of cabinet. Rather, you may choose exactly what you want.

The Pros:

Personalization

You have complete control over the design, materials, finishes, and features of your cabinets, allowing you to create a one-of-a-kind look that reflects your style and preferences. Perhaps you want bold colors that contrast with each other perfectly. Maybe a one-of-a-kind, exquisite range head over the stove is exactly what you desire in your dream kitchen. The options are nearly endless.

Quality Construction

Custom cabinets are typically constructed with high quality materials and craftsmanship, ensuring durability and longevity. The craftsmen who custom-build cabinets are generally very highly skilled and experienced builders. The cabinets may be made with oak, maple, cherry or another type of material, and they will be created specifically for YOUR kitchen.

Maximized Storage

Custom cabinets can be designed to maximize storage space and efficiency, with features such as pull out shelves, built in organizers, and specialized storage solutions. There are many options for specialized storage when you are in control of the build. From slide out spice racks to hidden pet dishes and magic corners, there need be no wasted space in your custom kitchen.

The Cons:

Higher Cost

Custom cabinets are generally more expensive than pre-made options due to the personalized design and craftsmanship involved. There is no assembly line in a custom cabinet shop. Each cabinet is specifically created as per your preferences. Naturally, such pieces will take more time to create than ones on an assembly line, which means a higher cost.

Longer Lead Time

Custom cabinets typically have a longer lead time for fabrication and installation, which may delay your remodel project. Once again, assembly lines mass produce cabinets, they church them out, reducing the lead time. Custom cabinets are created on a customer by customer basis, which will certainly take more time to create.

Professional Installation Required

Custom cabinets often require professional installation, adding to the overall cost of the remodel. We highly, highly recommend hiring a solid, design build company to install any cabinets one buys, whether they are custom cabinets or pre-made ones. However, certainly, with custom cabinets, they will be more difficult to install than pre-made ones. If one is spending the extra money to have a custom created kitchen, they will want nothing but the best professional to install it.

Pre-Made Cabinets

The Pros:

Cost-Effective

Premade cabinets are generally more budget friendly than custom options, making them a great choice for homeowners on a tight budget. Anything you can just drive to a store and purchase is almost certainly going to be more affordable than a custom-made item.

Quick Installation

Pre made cabinets are readily available and can be installed more quickly than custom cabinets, reducing downtime during the remodel. Generally, there is a set number of sizes the pre-made cabinets come in and therefore the installers will have installed similar sized cabinets many times before, reducing the time needed on your installation.

Variety of Styles and Finishes

Premade cabinets come in a wide range of styles, finishes, and configurations, allowing you to find options that suit your aesthetic preferences. It is not as wide of a variety as custom cabinets come in, however, there are enough choices of cabinets to please most homeowners.

the-full-kitchen-renovation

indooroutdoorguy.ca

The Cons:

Limited Customization

While pre made cabinets offer a variety of options, they may not provide the same level of customization as custom cabinets. You may need to compromise on certain features or design elements. Perhaps your heart is set on a particular shade of oak cabinet that is not available in the pre-made cabinet lineup. Your kitchen space may require an extra wide cabinet on one wall, but the pre made cabinets do not come in that particular width. Possibly, you want a very specific item in your kitchen such as a built-in wine rack. Alas, that is not an option with the pre-made cabinets you chose.

Standard Sizing

Premade cabinets come in standard sizes, which may not perfectly fit your kitchens dimensions. This can result in wasted space or the need for filler panels. An extra space on either side of the refrigerator is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Quality Variation

Quality can vary among premade cabinet brands and manufacturers, so it’s essential to research and choose reputable brands known for their durability and craftsmanship. It is very disappointing when you open up the cabinet boxes for installation and the material used is wrong, or the color, or the size. These are all standards of quality that may vary in pre-made cabinets.

Your Budget

If you have a limited budget, pre-made cabinets may be the more practical choice. However, if budget is not a concern and you prioritize personalized design and quality craftsmanship, custom cabinets may be worth the investment. Perhaps you would consider installing pre-made cabinets in your laundry room and bathrooms but have custom cabinets in your kitchen, where they will shine and endure.

Your Needs

Evaluate your kitchen layout, storage requirements, and design preferences to determine whether custom cabinets are necessary to meet your needs or if pre-made options will suffice. Doing this ahead of time will reduce stress. Some decisions may be hard ones to make, but the peace of mind associated with having everything settled ahead of the renovation is priceless.

Hire A Design & Build Company

Work with a kitchen designer or contractor to explore both custom and pre-made cabinet options and determine which option best aligns with your vision, budget, and timeline.

Ultimately, the decision between custom and pre-made cabinets depends on your priorities, budget, and the specific requirements of your kitchen remodel. Whether you choose custom cabinets for their personalized design and quality craftsmanship or opt for pre-made cabinets for their affordability and quick installation, the goal is to create a beautiful and functional kitchen space that enhances your home and lifestyle.

Considerations for An Aging in Place Renovation

Hire a professional company that has experience with this type of renovation.

This is likely a fairly obvious point, however, so many individuals think they can renovate, when fewer actually have the skills required to renovate properly. A design-build company that has experience with aging in place renovations will be able to assist you with the entire process, from budgeting to layout to installation. An authentic contractor or company will have access to trades people to perform the tasks and will be able to navigate the permit process, if the renovation requires one. Most renovations of this type do require at least one permit. A professional builder and renovator will be insured and have the staff needed to complete the remodel in an orderly timeline.

Set a budget

While there are not as many choices for aging in place remodeling as there are with regular renovation projects, there are still choices that will impact any budget. It is important to determine what the cost would be to live in an assisted living home at this juncture. For example, if it will cost $80,000 annually to live in an assisted living facility that meets your wants and needs, you can estimate that an $80,000 renovation to make your home suitable to aging in place will be paid off in one year’s time. And so forth. Understanding what the cost of the alternative is, is necessary to determine your budget and feel confident in it.

Outside Accessibility

Before we look at making the inside of your home accessible, we need to make sure you can safely enter your home! Let’s start with installing a ramp with handrails to the front door or most used door. The ramp should be a very gradual incline for three reasons. Firstly, one needs to use upper body strength to propel their wheelchair up-hill, no matter how small the hill is. Secondly, one needs to slow down their wheelchair when rolling down a hill and if ice is ever in that area, a very gradual incline will be much safer than the alternative. Thirdly, the ramp should be accessible for anyone using a walker and a gradual incline is best for this scenario. Consider placing no-slip strips on the ramp as well.

Inside Accessibility & Flooring

A ranch style home or bungalow is much more conducive to an aging in place situation than a two-story home is. In a bungalow, generally, everything is on the main floor, which makes it much easier to get around. If one lives in a home that has stairs, install stair lifts and/or an elevator.

Inside the home, consider placing either no-slip strips or anti-skid mats on any flooring that could be slippery when dry or wet. Surfaces that have the potential to become slippery include laminate, hardwood and tile. If installing any of these three flooring types, ensure that it has built-in texture so it is less slippery.

Walkers and canes, as well as shoes and slippers, can find navigating flat surfaces challenging at times, especially if water is spilled on the surface. Do not use area rugs and carpets that are not firmly attached to the floor. Un-affixed rugs are a pain to wheel over and are a slipping hazard to one with a cane, walker or less than perfect balance.

Moreover, installing flooring that is wheelchair friendly, think NOT carpet, is not only easier to traverse but is quicker to clean. Ensure that the flooring does not change in height when moving from one room to another. Also ensure that there are no electrical cords or tripping hazards in all rooms.

Again, having all one needs on the main floor of the home will make it much easier to age in place. A master suite with full bathroom on the main floor as well as a laundry room is highly recommended.

Inside Accessibility & Flooring

Lighting

Having abundant lighting in a home will help prevent accidents from happening. Bring a low chair to all the light switches and sit on that chair, as if it was a wheelchair. Can you easily reach the light switches? Probably not. What level is easily reachable by sitting in that low chair? That is the height to install the light switches at. Motion sensor lights are also a very good idea, both inside and out.

Bathroom

Bathrooms can be fraught with danger due to the nature of bathing and the wet surfaces that arise from this. Ensure the flooring is not slippery by installing anti-slip strips and anti-slip tile. Also ensure that water from the shower or bath stays in the bathtub or shower stall.

Ensure the faucets are at a level that is easy for someone in a wheelchair to reach. As well, ensure the faucets are easy to operate. Check to make sure that the water temperature of your home is not so hot it would burn if the wrong faucet was turned on.

We also recommend installing some type of bidet. This makes staying clean so much easier.

Kitchen

A wheelchair accessible kitchen requires some significant alterations. Firstly, the countertops will need to be at a level one can access while in a wheelchair. This means the sink is lower as well. There will need to be room to wheel around in the kitchen, generally more room than is in most kitchens currently. Pull-out cabinet drawers and shelves will make accessing items much easier. A sink that has room underneath to sit at would be very helpful to do dishes and meal prep.

Consider installing an auto-shut off oven and stove, for a safety precaution. There are Smart Stoves and Smart Ovens which can be programmed to automatically shut off when not in use after a set amount minutes.

Smart Home Features

As long as you know that Bluetooths have nothing to do with your teeth, you are hip enough to understand the technology! Bluetooth technology can help homeowners control devices and even appliances from anywhere in the house via their phone. Furthermore, a Wi-Fi internet connection can also allow one to remotely operative a variety of things including security systems and appliances. There are refrigerators that allow you to see inside of them from your phone so you know whether or not you are out of eggs, butter and milk, for example. No need to actually open the refrigerator door to find out. We suppose that DOES take the fun out of it, but there are more entertaining things to do than open the refrigerator…at least, we hope there are!

Voice technology allows us to operate items simply by speaking. We like trying this: “Alexa, what’s in my refrigerator?” Now THAT is entertaining! Once you have had enough fun from giving Alexa a hard time, you can turn on some music with your voice and even order a pizza that way.

Smart technology can be used to lock or unlock your doors, adjust your lighting and even your home temperature.

Security cameras and doorbell cameras can connect to a phone so you can see who is ringing your doorbell.

There are medic alert systems that allow the users to push a button or even just speak to have help sent. There are even smart medication dispensers that let you know when it is time to take your prescription and won’t let you take an extra dose if you forgot you already took it.

Maintenance & Emergency Preparedness

This is not a category to be overlooked. Firstly, ensure that any repairs that are needed are completed. Install battery-operated lights that will brightly illuminate your home, especially the top and bottom of stairs, if there is a power outage.

Have an organized system for mail, flyers, recycling and trash. Items we do not own but that pass through our home need a place to go, too. Perhaps more trash and recycling bins are needed all around the house? Keeping the home clutter-free makes it easier to navigate the space and less stressful to live there.

Have any prescription medicine clearly labelled and easily accessible for the patient or caregiver. Finally, ensure there are current, functioning smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home.

Following these recommendations will help one transition to a comfortable home where they can age in place.

Bidets, Bidettas & Bidet Sprayers

Most people born in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s will react to hearing the word “bidet” by donning an Australian accent and saying “for washing your backside, right?” We will never tire of hearing that! However, let us clear up one common misconception about bidets: there are several different types of them. Let’s take a trip around the world to look at how different countries deal with, well, you know.

The French Twist

The bidet basin seen in Crocodile Dundee originated in France in the 1600s. In French, the word bidet means “small horse” or “pony”. The idea behind the name was to indicate that the bidet user needs to straddle the seat as if riding a horse.

Arnold Cohen, Bidet King Extraordinaire

The modern-day bidet that typically comes to mind was invented by Arnold Cohen who lived in Brooklyn, New York. His father had a medical condition and his caring son invented the bidet so ease the discomfort. How sweet! It was coined the American Sitzbath. This seat washed and dried the behind. It included a hose as well as a foot pedal for operation. The problem was that though many people could find relief with the American Sitzbath, very few actually wanted to talk about it out loud. Mr. Cohen installed the seats by the thousands across suburban New York as hardly any network was willing to air his ads. So, Arnold licensed and patented his invention and pitched it to the Toto Company in Japan. Toto Co. upgraded it and by 1989 the Washlet Sleek was launched.

It’s Big in Japan!

Japan is big on personal hygiene and cleanliness. In Japan, it is customary to remove your shoes when entering a traditional household or restaurant. Often a set of slippers will be provided to you to use during your visit or stay. The streets, buses and subways are very clean in Japan and hand sanitizer dispensers in public areas have been common since long before 2020. It should come as no surprise that this nation takes bathroom hygiene to another level with many toilet designs that are much more elaborate than ones in other countries.

The most commonly found bidet in Japan is the bidet toilet, and it is found in more than 81% of Japanese homes. How did Japan get on the bidet train? As we stated above, Arnold Cohen pitched his idea to Toto Co. and Japan took the invention to another level. It was a hit, a bit hit. Unsurprisingly so, considering how highly the Japanese value cleanliness. It was a perfect fit for the culture of Japan.

Japanese bidets often have a huge number of bells and whistles. Warm seats and warm water, as well as music to stimulate bowel movement, flushing sound effects to dampen mortifying noises and even air conditioning!

Finland – Saunas and Bidettas

The land of the saunas! Finland has a population of approximately 5.3 million people. There are over 2 million saunas in Finland. Did you know that there are more Bidetta hand showers in Finland than saunas? How many Bidettas per capita are there in Finland? No, this is not a math question on a school test, though we think it would be an interesting one.

In 1968, an engineer working at Oras came up with the idea to create a hand shower for bathrooms. Most Finns know exactly what a Bidetta is and many would be amiss without one. If you travel to Finland and stay in a hotel, you may wonder what the small shower affixed to the wall near the toilet is to be used for. It is meant to be versatile, though most people in Finland use it for hygiene purposes. Some use it to clean the bathroom or even to wash their hair in the sink. It must be said that we do not recommend washing your hair in the sink, especially with all the incredible shower heads available today.

The Bidetta is active once the sink faucet is turned on. Simply pull the trigger handle on the shower wand and the flow of water will be redirected from the faucet to the Bidetta. The original Bidetta design went through some hiccups and was redone several times before it was perfected. We have to give it to the Finns for their advertising methods. Don Draper didn’t dream this ad up. Only a Finn could think up something so bold, so outrageous that it just might work. Their humorous magazine ads featured a naked but carefully concealed Finnish man with a mustache, on a toilet, using the Bidetta.
